A hold is usually added when you've committed to paying for a transaction but the final amount hasn't been confirmed by the merchant. The money is then 'held' so that you can't accidentally overspend or use the promised money elsewhere.
Holds usually last at least a few hours, however this can stretch up to a few days depending on the type of product being purchased.
Hotels can keep a hold on your account for the length of your stay and a bit beyond that. Once you have checked out, you should expect to see the hold removed from your account six days after the final transaction is made.
If some time has exceeded and the hold is still on your account, please do contact that merchant as they’ll be able to remove it on their end.
Just so you know:
You're highly likely to see these when you are travelling, as hotels and rental services will place a hold on your account for the expected amount, but as you may incur damages extra costs on these services, they will withhold confirming the final amount until the service is fulfilled.
